Slipping resolutions

February 3, 2018

So I feel a bit bummed out this week because I've slipped in my resolution to keep posting on the site. No excuse really other than being very grumpy about the students at work being unable to voluntarily shut up for more than a nanosecond. I have noticed that I've become much more intolerant of noise as I get older, and let me tell you dear reader, I am VERY intolerant of the noise that's generated by children... so I may not exactly be in the right job. But I know that.

Which sort of ties into the subject of this post. For one of my lessons this week I was supervising the isolation room - where the really bad kids are sent to be bored out of their skulls as a punishment. As I was in there for the last lesson of the day the kids were very bored indeed, and more than a bit restless, so I had to growl at them a bit. I was fairly bored myself as my job doesn't actually give me ongoing work to do in spare bits of time like this. After staring out of the window and ignoring the students for a while I caved in and decided to do a drawing just to keep myself occupied.

I may as well have produced a magic wand and conjured up a unicorn. The kids - all lads - were obsessed with what I was doing. One of them who I actually got on really well with was particularly smitten with what I was doing - a Red Deer stag - and practically begged to have it at the end of the day. It was an okay sketch, but nothing to write home about so I had no problem with giving it away at all.
Have you heard of a social thing where you read a book, and when you've finished it, I think you write your name in the front and the date and then you leave it in a public place for someone else to read. I've never seen a book to pick up like that, but I think it's a really cool idea. I think it would be a cool idea to do something similar with artwork - just small pieces, not something that I would invest a lot of time in, but something that someone might like and want to keep. The idea of doing little pieces of art and leaving them around school would be interesting, if perhaps a little odd. The idea of doing artwork and having a continuing story as part of it is even more attractive. Whether I'm in the right part of the world to do something like this is another matter - I imagine it working better in a large city with used communal or social spaces to leave the work, although it occurs that artwork in a bottle washed up in the beach is pretty intriguing.

Of course, the win-condition for something like that is time, a commodity which I don't have enough of, but it's something to think on and plan for.
Another thing I'm thinking about and planning is perhaps some pieces on newsprint, but hopefully Japanese newsprint. There's a trip from school going to Kyoto next week and I've already put in an order for a newspaper, so we'll see what happens, but I like the idea of a gouache background (I have some lovely lime green that I'm itching to use) and then pencil work over the top with the newsprint showing though... we'll see. I have an idea of a dragonfly, with some bronze mixed in with the green in my head at the moment.

I'm also cogitating and planning more Monkey King. I have one more section to upload and that'll be the end of the current chapter, so that will be up soon. I thought I knew what was coming next, but on reflection, I've decided to switch the next two chapters around, so I need to do a little bit of research and planning before writing. I want to get a good chunk of writing time the week after next as it's half term, so I'll have some down time in which to work.

So while not a lot of work has actually taken place in the last week or so, there are plans afoot dear reader, so watch this space!
